All Infomaniak users can send encrypted emails from their email address. This protection can be activated with a single click at the time of sending and works with any email provider, enabling sensitive data sent (research and development, health, finance, etc.) to be protected in full compliance with the FADP, EPDA and GDPR – all without technical complexity.
A sovereign messaging service that simplifies your legal compliance
Developed and hosted entirely in Switzerland, Infomaniak Mail allows you to activate the encryption of an email with a single click at the time of writing. This security works with all providers, including Gmail and Outlook.
“We have developed this additional security to meet the growing data protection requirements in sensitive sectors such as research, healthcare, finance and law”, explains Marc Oehler, CEO of Infomaniak.
In Switzerland as in Europe, the law requires the transmission of sensitive or personal data to be made secure, particularly in the domains of health, law, finance and research.
- In Switzerland, Article 8 of the FADP requires the implementation of appropriate technical measures to protect personal data, and Article 12 of the EPDA reinforces this obligation for health data.
- In Europe, Article 32 of the GDPR recommends measures such as encryption to ensure the security of sensitive data.
Free for all Infomaniak addresses
Whether you have a free @ik.me, @etik.com or @ikmail.com email address or a personalised email address with your domain name, this security is available to all users free of charge.
Here are different ways to obtain an Infomaniak address depending on your situation:
- Create a 100% free Infomaniak email address
- Register a domain name with a free personalised address
- Create personalised email addresses with Infomaniak’s collaborative suite
Robust encryption without technical complexity
Our encryption system is based on recognised standards (OpenPGP, ECC, AES-256-GCM). Here are the four scenarios to help understand how email encryption works at Infomaniak:
When you send an encrypted email to a Gmail, Outlook or other such contact, you need to set a password at the time of sending, which you then need to send to the recipient via another channel. The message is then encrypted with a temporary key specific to this password, to ensure confidentiality on the recipient side. At the same time, the message is also encrypted with an internal key specific to your account, allowing you to keep it securely in your “Sent Messages” folder. The recipient receives a link to a secure reading page and will need to enter the password set to decrypt and view the email.
If your recipient also uses an Infomaniak address, everything is automatic. The message is encrypted, signed, and read only after authentication. There are no passwords to transmit.
When a message encrypted by Infomaniak is sent to your Infomaniak address, we retrieve it via IMAP and decrypt it on the fly in a secure interface. You don’t have to do anything: everything happens automatically in Infomaniak Mail.
If you send an encrypted email to a Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo or other such contact, they will receive a link to our secure reading interface. Once the password has been entered, the message is displayed with no account or software to install.

Unlike encryption systems that can lead to loss of access to data, Infomaniak ensures the right balance between robust security and continuity of access.
Private keys never leave Infomaniak’s infrastructure. Passphrases that protect keys are never stored in clear text and are only decoded on the fly during an authenticated session. In the event of an unauthorised access attempt, even with the IMAP password of a compromised email address, the content of the encrypted messages remains protected by the two-factor authentication of the Infomaniak account.
Coming soon on mobile and PGP compatible
In the coming months, email encryption will also be available in the Infomaniak Mail mobile app.
Two major developments are also in the pipeline:
- the ability to reply to an encrypted email sent to an external email provider such as Gmail or Outlook via Infomaniak’s secure reading interface.
- support for custom PGP keys to exchange securely with other encrypted messaging services.
This guarantees maximum security for your professional discussions, without compromising on simplicity or compatibility with your interlocutors.
