PHP 7 can be used on all sites hosted by Infomaniak. This version is a major development in PHP which makes website loading faster, improves error management, enhances the security of cryptography functions and massively improves PHP language performance.
PHP 7: up to 2x faster than PHP 5.6
Depending on the case in point, a site operating with PHP 7 will run up to twice as fast as with PHP 5.6 and up to 14 times faster than with PHP 5. Web applications already compatible with PHP 7 also benefit from this performance gain and according to Zend, a WordPress site with PHP 7 could also run up to 183 requests per second more than with PHP 5.6. Drupal, Magento and the other CMS also benefit from this development.
Precautions you should take before using PHP 7
If your site operates with a CMS, it is recommended that you check that its current version is compatible with PHP 7. For example, the latest versions of WordPress, Drupal, Typo3, Magento and ownCloud are already compatible with PHP 7 while for Joomla, it will be necessary to wait for version 3.5 before migrating.
For developers already using PHP 5.6, migrating to PHP 7 should not involve making many modifications. It is still necessary, however, to consult the official documentation to be find out the different functions as well as any incompatibilities with previous PHP versions.
